John W. Pontius (found on the left inside this photograph) was an Upper Arlington resident that served inside World War I. He was the secretary of the Columbus YMCA plus delivered back normal reports of the war. One poignant letter which he started composing when crossing the Atlantic within the U.S. to Britain inside May 1918 was printed inside the June 1918 Norwester magazine. The letter was created over many days plus describes the weather throughout the voyage–the tipping of ship as well as the fog–and the truth which he has not experienced the seasickness which his other guests have. He addresses his five-year-old daughter Jean whenever he mentions the sighting of the whale. Pontius was kept busy because the Director of Activities. He describes the various kindnesses plus deprivations of the British persons when he reaches the British Isles. He expresses self-confidence which "Fritz is licked" plus is careful throughout his letter and anything which may compromise the war effort when it fell into the incorrect hands.

Pontius returned within the war plus resumed his escapades inside Upper Arlington for years following. His wife Hazel, furthermore active inside the community, became a school board associate from 1918 to 1927. They lived at 1644 Cambridge Boulevard.
